Back to Basics on School Vouchers

      the GOP School Voucher Crew

According to Atlanta Journal-Constitution education writer Maureen Downey, “The early architects of school choice maintained that getting kids out of struggling public schools into private ones would raise academic performance as measured by test scores.” She goes on to cite a study showing that students using publicly funded vouchers at District of Columbia private schools scored worse on standardized tests than their public school counterparts.

An Election Isn’t an Invitation to Self-expression

      Vote by Mykl Roventine

Countless electrons are being agitated during this election cycle over what a voter who can’t stomach either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should do. What’s being offered the conflicted and afflicted is pretty depressing.

One tortured option invites voters to simultaneously salve their consciences and save their country by trading their votes. This strikes me as so bizarre that I’m not sure I even have it right. But the idea seems to be something like this…

I Read It On the Internet

“Sometimes, I go on the internet and just tell lies” – George Washington

When President Obama said, at the Democratic National Convention, that Hillary Clinton is better prepared to occupy the Oval Office than any previous aspirant, he had no idea how right he was. This woman has powers that mere mortals don’t. She’s way past bitch all the way to witch. I mean literally. I know because I read it on the Internet.

Think about it. Forty people who were slated to testify to her criminal malfeasance in letting the American Consulate at Benghazi, Libya, get incinerated have all been murdered. And although my Facebook informant is kind of shaky on the details, he’s absolutely certain …

Hillary Clinton Is a Victim of Her Virtues

      by | 13, Add your Comment | Aug 22, 2016
      Hillary Clinton by Mike Mozart

When a Facebook friend slammed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton recently as a “godawful (sic) human being,” that triggered images of god-awful human beings like – you know–Adolf Eichmann, Pol Pot and Osama bin Laden. Turns out that the Facebooker wasn’t thinking of crimes against humanity but Clinton’s failure to be entirely forthcoming about her State Department e-mails. Since that didn’t seem to me to make the cut for “god-awful human being,” I thought again, as I often have, about why Clinton inspires such thoughtless vitriol. I think it’s because she’s a victim of her virtues.

      Blue-Collar Blues

Hard Hat Riot (May 8, 1970 in New York City) via Wikimedia Commons

This election cycle is looking like a slow motion tragedy for millions of mostly white, middle age blue-collar workers with only a high school education who’ve been marginalized by deindustrialization. This is roughly the population whose rising death rate was uncovered by Princeton University economists Angus Deaton and Annie Case. As reported by the New York Times last November, they found that “The mortality rate for whites 45 to 54 years old with no more than a high school education increased by 134 deaths per 100,000 people from 1999 to 2014.”

Democratic Party Super Delegates Are a Feature, Not a Flaw

      "Super Delegates" by Randall Enos

Blame Facebook for this post. Got into an online conversation with a staunch Bernie Sanders supporter who had a jaundiced opinion of the Democratic Party’s “super delegates.” The few basics I offered about how our political parties work came as news to him, as he thought they would to most people. I thought they would to almost nobody. In case he’s right and I’m not, I’m filling out here what I told my fellow Facebooker.

Into the North Carolina Transgender Weeds

North Carolina’s HB 2, aka the “bathroom law,” has provoked outrage and ridicule in equal measure. The feeble defense the law’s supporters are putting up invites speculation about their real agenda. Unless safety concerns track religious belief for some hitherto unnoticed reason, it’s worth wondering why faith-based organizations in particular have been so vocal in raising alarms about the depredations this law is supposed to spare everybody.

      Georgia’s “Campus Carry” Scam

      Georgia's "Campus Carry" Scam

According to recent reports, members of the Georgia General Assembly are scrambling to respond to Governor Deal’s reservations about HB 859, the “campus carry” bill, now on his desk. The bill permits students at least 21 years old with concealed weapons permits to possess firearms anywhere on the state’s public college campuses except residence halls, fraternities, sororities, and athletic events.

It’s no wonder legislators are confused. A couple of weeks ago, Governor Deal airily dismissed arguments against the legislation as “lacking validity.” In recent days, however, he’s become persuaded that the bill has to be substantially revised…

Clearing the Air Over Jekyll Island

Clearing the Air Over Jekyll Island

The Myth. Of all the traditions associated with Georgia’s tradition-rich Jekyll Island, none is more durable than its being at the eye of controversy, the latest stoked by the Jekyll Island Authority’s ongoing redevelopment program. The complaints, simmering in The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Internet web sites and elsewhere, feature invocations of M. E. Thompson, who, as acting governor, acquired the island for the state. The knock is that the Jekyll Island Authority’s management of the island is a betrayal of Thompson’s populist vision of Jekyll Island as “a state park for the plain people of Georgia.”

Donald Trump Is Worse than Rude and Crude

TRiUMPh The Insult Comic Candidate - Make America Poop Again! by DonkeyHotey via flickr

The Washington Post Editorial Board thinks that former U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate Robert Dole is a doddering old fool for saying that Donald Trump has “the right personality” for the presidency. “Say what?” was the Post’s reaction to Dole’s assessment.

But the Post, like much of the media, is overlooking the fact that there are actually two Donald Trumps running for president in this cycle. One of them is the nativist bigot, who wants to round up 11 million undocumented immigrants and ship them back to their home countries..
