I didn’t think it would happen to me. I thought I was so open minded; basically a wild-eyed radical gently easing into being a nice liberal.
Live and let live.
Well, no more.
I like to think that I am an informed, conscientious world citizen. On Twitter as @hidingunderhere I follow 930 news feeds and supporters for all types of candidates and issues from places all over the earth. The feed has been my loyal companion when I want to find the truth, because recently the mainstream media #MSM has failed to cover almost everything, choosing 24/7 McTrumpNews instead. Yes, even Rachel Maddow has been devoting more than half of her shows to the US primaries recently.
Unfortunately, my twitter feed has been devolving recently. I usually just let all the tweets flow past my screen, sometimes clicking on a link, mostly just grazing through the headlines. To put the proportion of Twitter feeds I see in perspective, @SenSanders has 2.03M followers, @HillaryClinton 6.45M, and @realDonaldTrump reaches 8.54M. For #MSM, @CNNbrk breaking news has 39.4M, @Reuters 13.3M, @Fox News has 9.33M and @MSNBC a lowly 1.01M.
This morning, I was startled to see some of the Bernie-or-die crowd taking their criticisms to a new low. So for the first time, I sent a message to one because the mommie in me was concerned: @thewobbleeffect why are you so angry?
She responded: If you’re not angry about our fellow humans being used as pawns by corrupt politicians… That says more about you @hidingunderhere
It got “liked” a couple of times (as did my tweet to her). It doesn’t seem terribly incendiary, but it started me thinking some very dark thoughts. First of all, I wondered how the BernieBros were going to make peace at the Democratic Convention, or if it would end up like the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago — or worse?
Then I started thinking about being at a backyard BarBQ with them, how we might start off agreeing about some issues, but then not so much. I wondered if there were also Trump supporters at the party, which people would be harder to like. I also wondered if they would be more comfortable howling at the horrible world they live in together, rather than talking with me about anything nice. Perhaps they would both turn on me, throw things — or worse?
Well, I kept on reading Twitter feeds looking for sunshine, and came to one that made me feel better: Propane Jane @docrocktex26 You can’t just create a new identity for the Democratic Party because you want your guy to overthrow it. That’s not how it works here.
So I asked her:
@docrocktex26 Your tweets are great. Do you have any suggestions what/if should be said to the angry Berncrazies like @thewobbleeffect?
She said: Thanks, honestly I’m just ignoring and/or muting them. Some of these folk are too rigid for reason.
Sounds like good advice! I’m going to start blocking the mean girls and guys, and OH WAIT! am I becoming as closed-minded as those I criticize?
Whatever — I think I’ll invite Propane Jane and the 191 people who “liked” or shared her thoughts to my next party.
