My last interview with Heath Ledger

He’s been gone for more than three years now. He left us way too soon.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Heath Ledger several times over the last decade. He has always been extremely polite and somewhat talkative. My last interview with him, however, was anything but that.

When I last spoke with Heath it was for the 2007 film ‘I’m Not There’. It was basically a movie about six different incarnations of Bob Dylan. I was part of a press junket in which reporters from around the world (30 in all maybe?) interviewed the stars of the movie in 5-minute intervals.

Heath was noticably late that day, about 2 hours. This was uncharacteristic of him. His appearance seemed to be a bit shocking to several of the veteran reporters. He looked pale, out of sorts, his clothes were wrinkled and worn, his hair was a mess, we soon realized that something was not right.

Soon it was clear that the interviews with Heath were running short because reporters could not really get him to talk about much of anything. Reporters started talking and the basic consensus was to get in and get out quickly. In fact many of us were under the assumption that Heath would not stay very long at all.

In any event, I did get to talk with him one last time.

Here is my last interview with Heath.

I have interviewed hundreds of movie stars over the years and I can say that this was one of my worst ones I have ever done.

I am certainly not posting this video for vanity reasons. I do, however, want viewers to see his condition, just days before he passed. Very seldom do you get to see an entire interview with a star. If you are lucky, you get to see about 10 to 15 seconds.

Most of this interview ended up on the cutting room floor but, I am happy to say, I was able to make Heath smile and laugh, and that is an accomplishment in and of itself.

To his family, my sympathies. I am sure that it comforts them to know he will be forever immortalized in films.

To his young daughter Matilda, my heart. Your daddy was a wonderful man.

RIP Heath. We miss you.

Thank you for sharing this. It is very shocking to say the least. He really appears to be a troubled young man. I was so sorry when I heard of his passing, and now even three years later it still seems so tragic. We can only imagine what was going on in his life. I feel such great sympathy for his family, especially his young daughter who never got a chance to know her father.

For some reason, a letter from the lobbying arm of the Heritage Foundation was characterized as having been received by NBC News, as if it were some sort of privileged communication.
