To me, the Allman Brothers are the defining Southern band by which all others are judged with the Skynnard boys very, very close.

I saw them many times in Atlanta in the late 60's early 70's. Even through the haze they always left an impression. We went to see them last year in Tampa and they are still great. They have always been one of top 3 favorite bands.

Lucky you were to see that concert. Great story on a great band, I love their range, going from hard rock to sweet ballads and amazing instrumentals.

Nice story, Mike, wish I'd been there. Although I count myself as fortunate to have seen them a half dozen times, once at the Chester Street Sports Arena, playing with the Grateful Dead. No fancy shirts, no light show, just great music, always.

As fine as each musician in the band was, for me the magic was the (pardon a postmodern word) totality of the sound. Jazzy vamps like Elizabeth Reed; Greg's smoky voice over Jaimo and Butch's drumming and Berry's ripe bass licks, and the well-crafted twin guitar lines that soared above that pefect foundation. Nobody has ever come close to that sound. Of course, I'd always swear that Duane's slide guitar could split the sky like lightning.

Long may they ride.
