3 weeks into the Dew Shop experiment to help the Dew, here’s a report (as of 12/20/09): 109,000 ad views; 560 click throughs to merchants; 4 sales (1 mine, 1 my daughter’s); total sales: $60.04; total commissions to support the Dew: $2.41.
I’d love to know why more readers aren’t using this since it doesn’t cost anything to help the Dew. Please comment. Thanks.

    Why a Surge for Guantanamo?

    Why a Surge for Guantanamo?

    By: John Hickman

Could there be a more appropriate monument to the War in Terror than the wasteful and counterproductive prison camp at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base? At a cost of $4,360.00 a day per prisoner, it is among the most expensive lock-ups on the planet and surely the most expensive for inmates who are neither deposed heads of state nor leaders of defeated rebellions. (For that amount you could book a Premier Suite at the Ritz Carleton Central Park and still have a thousand dollars left over to pay for dinner!) The cost in international reputation cannot be calculated in dollars but there  Read on →

May you live in an interesting age

May you live in an interesting age

    By: KC Wildmoon

Tuesday morning, you may have heard, there was an explosion in a maintenance shed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport here in the Big Peach. It killed the power to Concourse D, so officials evacuated the folks there to Concourse E. When the power was restored, everybody went on their merry ways. But lawdamursy, did Twitter ever light up. I used "Atlanta airport" and "Hartsfield" as my search terms ... and you seriously wouldn't believe all the "OMG WHAT IS GOING ON IN ATLANTA" tweets. Especially after some poor soul thought a minor explosion at the airport would make a good cover for  Read on →

    Science vs. Pseudoscience

    Science vs. Pseudoscience

    By: Dave Pruett

"Science does not need mysticism and mysticism does not need science, but [humans need] both." -- Fritjof Capra A conflict between "science" and "pseudoscience" is now playing out on the national stage. The conversation is long overdue. I speak of the recent flap surrounding two TED lectures on the nature of consciousness -- by Rupert Sheldrake and Graham Hancock -- that were initially removed from YouTube because TED's scientific curators deemed them "pseudoscience." The move generated strong reaction from TED's normally doting followers. Sheldrake's and Graham's offense: proposing the unorthodox view that consciousness is nonlocal. *****At issue is the relationship between "brain" and  Read on →

Machine Madness and Big Al Gore

Machine Madness and Big Al Gore

    By: Mike Copeland

Let's think about PRISM. The problem isn’t that someone is going to be  listening to your telephone conversations or looking at your telephone records. They may well do so, no matter what the President says. Indeed, they will be because that is the nature of human curiosity. However, that is not the problem. The problem is the machine that is PRISM will be looking at every telephone call you make and every email address you send something to or receive something from. Likewise, the machine will take note of every web site you visit, and, if you have a blog or we  Read on →
