Poverty has such a differnet meaning today. Many of my students are on welfare, but the family has a cell phone, cable TV, expensive clothes and shoes, etc. The children get 2 good meals at school and throw a lot of it away. I think we would have many more people taking advantage of education and work opportunities if the alternative was the severe poverty of the Depression era.

Good writin', Tom, as ususal.
On my mother's side, I had uncles in the CCC, and I still remember their stories and recollections of "Hoovervilles." That's probably why I still can't bring myself to vote Republican. BTW, the next time you're at Manny's, go see bartender Bobby Agee and tell him how much you appreciate his uncle's work.

Tom there is a side to the struggles of the depression that affected me and was not mentioned here. My Father would be 100 years old this month and lived through the depression on a farm with 12 other brothers and sisters. To feed 14 people then was no small task. I am getting off subject here- when I came along he vowed to my mother that my brother and I would not have to live like he did. Although his actions were noble it did not teach us what he had learned. I was well into my thirties before I begain to realize what it accually takes to go thrue life. Needless to say I grew up slowly compared to what he endured early in life. I lost two things due to my Dad's thinking--him at an early age from working himself to death and me learning about true life to late to make the best out of my life.

Another thought provoking piece. I learn things I never knew and that is the beauty of your writing. As it takes you with it on its fascinating path, it teaches you and makesyou think along the way. Perfection!
