didn't hear about this until a few days after it happened, due to the non-stop Michael Jackson coverage. What a shame. McNair was a hell of a player, and a great man. That Rams-Titans game was the finest Superbowl i've ever seen. I just remember cursing at the top of my lungs at the TV when they came up a yard short.

It's really too bad most people (not football folks, but most people) will remember him for being murdered by his mistress on the 4th of july.

Hearing about McNair pretty much ruined my 4th of July. One of my favorite players of all time.

RIP Air McNair

Good piece. Thanks for warning us away from judging too quickly - by reminding us there is always much, much more to a life story than the last headline.

It seems as a culture we want things to be good or evil while as a people we almost all live in a zone between the two. Thus, the good done by any celebrity, regardless of how many years of selfless service and charitable acts is always trumped by any indiscretion. One false move always leads the story and diminishes whatever positive impact the person has had. We gravitate to those stories, I think, because, perhaps it makes us feel better about our own moral failures. Thanks for shining a bright light on Steve McNair's positive impact. He may not have been perfect, but who is?

I so hope we are not defined by our poorest decisions, but rather they way we try to live everyday as you said. I confess to having known little about McNair, but am convinced by your story that he will be missed by many, much too soon.
