I followed Basu's writing from Iraq, at first because I was friends with the photographer she traveled with, Louie Favorite, and later because I became a fan of her writing, and understood the conflict and the people fighting it better because of her insights.
I remember driving in my car listening to NPR and being surprised to hear her voice talking about the fighting in Anwar province. She and Louie were the only journalists there when an uprising occurred. While neither would put much stock in their personal sacrifice, I was proud that our newspaper had journalists courageous and dedicated enough to tell that story. They are both heroes in my book. Thank you for telling such a heartfelt story about a great journalist.
